It was time to leave. I stopped next to Liam before going out into the rain and took the bone out of the shopping bag. I held it out to him. The look on his face was something to see.

I think he was surprised, maybe even touched. Or maybe I was reading too much into a dog’s expression. It wasn’t just a treat. It was an actual bone filled with some sort of chewy stuff. “Go ahead boy,” I said.

He took it as I stepped past him. I pulled my hood up then saw that he was following me. He stood next to me in the rain as I got on my bike with the bone hanging from his mouth. He was alert and guarded, like my own private security detail. He followed me to the gate. “Thanks, buddy,” I said. I almost patted him on the head, but then I thought better of it.

I didn’t look up, or out at the cove, as I rode home. In fact, I kept my head low, watching the wet pavement. It was better when I got to Main Street. Even on a rainy night, there were people going to the restaurants. The white lights decorating the trees were on, and I could see the evening crowds through the windows.

It was quieter near home. Fewer cars, fewer people. I pulled my bike into the condo complex and went in through the garage. When I came into the living room my mom looked up. She was sitting on the couch watching TV. “You’re soaked,” she said.

“Yeah, it’s really coming down.” I may have had a jacket on, but that didn’t do anything for my blue jeans.

“What’s going on with you?” she asked.

“What do you mean?” All I wanted to do was climb into a hot shower.

She turned the volume off. “Is it a girlfriend, something like that?”

“Oh God no,” I said, feeling my face turn red.

“If you have any questions you know you can ask me? I want us to be able to talk.”

“Mom, I really don’t,” I said. I looked at the slider, debating over throwing myself from the balcony. It was raining hard enough out there that it was spraying the glass door. The deck light was off, but the curtains were open. My eyes stayed on the glass for a moment too long. I thought I saw something out there. I wanted to look away. I should’ve looked away, left the room, and not come back.

The evening news was reflecting off the glass, but that’s not what I saw. There was something moving in the dark, just at the edge of the deck where the rain was falling hardest. Someone was standing in the shadows.

“Well, maybe you can talk to your grandfather?” my mom suggested. She didn’t see how tight my spine had become as I inched forward.

I went to the window, keeping my eyes away from the glass, looking at the carpet. “Yeah maybe,” I said, though I hadn’t actually heard her.
